SDSU’s Extended Studies Wins International Marketing Excellence Award

SDSU’s College of Extended Studies has been honored as a 2012 International LERN (Learning Resources Network) Awards winner for “excellence in marketing” with its comprehensive campaign for the new Master of Science in Hospitality Tourism and Management degree program at SDSU.

“It is a very gratifying honor to be recognized for the excellence we see every day here at the College of Extended Studies,” Dean Joe Shapiro said. “These awards recognize the college’s commitment to innovation and bringing the excellence of San Diego State University to the greater San Diego community and beyond.”

The new Hospitality Tourism and Management degree program will enable students to close the gap needed to move from basic leadership/managerial positions into complex leadership positions in national and multi-national organizations in this growing field. It also prepares them for the transition into positions requiring greater responsibility and accountability. The program will serve an international and national audience.

LERN’s primary criterion in selecting exemplary programs is the quality of being at the leading edge of the field of lifelong learning. In addition, the following criteria are considered: originality, innovation, appropriateness and adaptability as a model for other programs, and measurable outcomes.

According to LERN’s press release: “The College of Extended Studies at San Diego State University is being recognized for creating an excellent example of inbound marketing and customer relationship marketing strategies. The program promoted the opportunity to interact and opt into email marketing campaigns, created inbound links to its web site by not only using social media but also video and traditional news coverage.”

Julie Coates, vice president of information services for LERN, said this year’s award nominees were among the highest quality ever submitted. SDSU’s College of Extended Studies was selected from a field of more than 100 entries from four countries.

The College was presented its 2012 International LERN Award during the annual LERN Conference earlier this month in Washington, D.C.

SDSU's College of Extended Studies reaches out to the greater San Diego community, the nation, and the world with a wide variety of lifelong learning classes, seminars, and certificate programs. Career advancement courses are offered in many areas of management, leadership, and quality improvement while self-enrichment courses range from accounting to web design. Additionally, the College offers more than 50 certificate programs, online courses, and many other learning opportunities.
