SDSU Business Writing Course Teaches the 'Write' Way to Communicate

The Harvard Business Review makes it clear that people who use poor grammar will have a difficult time getting hired.

“Good grammar is credibility, especially on the internet. In blog posts, on Facebook statuses, in e-mails, and on company websites, your words are all you have. They are a projection of you in your physical absence,” says the story’s author.

Published author Anne Bromley is a writing instructor and consultant who will also share her secrets as instructor for the Professional Certificate in Business Writing program through SDSU’s College of Extended Studies during the spring semester helping people get it right – or write – the first time.

“What’s happening now is that more and more people are being called into management positions and forced to write,” she says. “They get kicked upstairs and realize they are not very good communicators in writing. It has caused a lot of problems in the workplace. We’ve had so many issues where people need help.”

Scott Tant of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is among students who have taken the program.

“The class was excellent. I just received a promotion where I’m involved in writing and editing contract specifications. The instructor brought out a lot of great suggestions in regard to the thought process before one begins to write, which I have already implemented. The instructor did an outstanding job in both her presentation and teaching,” he says.

Students receive assistance from Bromley in the Business Writing seminar, which is a series of three half-day workshops designed for professionals who would like to hone their writing skills. They include:

The Five Essential Steps, Thursday, April 3, 8:30 am-12 pm

Editing and Proofreading, Thursday, April 10, 8:30 am-12 pm

Polishing Your Grammar Skills, Thursday, April 17, 8:30 am-12 pm

The cost for each course is $185. There is a $20 discount on each course if you take all three courses. For information, call (619) 594-2193, email lhoward@mail.sdsu.edu or visit www.neverstoplearning.net/bw. The website includes a video.
