Tri-City Medical Center Orthopaedic Surgeon Hosts Global Conference on Shoulder Health

Tri-City Medical Center orthopaedic surgeon and shoulder surgery authority Dr. James Esch will host the 31st annual meeting of the San Diego Shoulder Institute on June 18-21. Since founding the program in 1983, Dr. Esch has seen it expand from 20 participants to hundreds and become one of the world’s foremost shoulder surgery educational programs. In addition to being a highly trusted name in orthopaedic surgery at the Tri-City Medical Center Orthopaedic & Spine Institute and within the San Diego community, Dr. Esch is referred to internationally as “the father of shoulder surgery education.”

“Dr. Esch is a humble and genuine leader… I will never know how many orthopaedic surgical procedures are begun around the world every day with Dr. Esch’s influence guiding the surgeon’s hand,” said San Diego Shoulder Institute COO Larky Blunck, RN.

“(The San Diego Shoulder Institute) has become an institution in and of itself, not only for shoulder education but orthopaedic education as well,” added French doctor Pascal Boileau. Inspired by Dr. Esch, whom he views as a father figure, Dr. Boileau developed a similar shoulder program in the Cote d’Azur.

Expected to welcome more than 400 health professionals from 34 countries worldwide, the conference will be held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront and feature seminars, cadaver surgeries and a “Evaluation and Treatment of the Throwing Shoulder” field demonstration at Petco Park. The Petco Park event will focus on the prevention, evaluation and treatment of throwing-induced injuries. Players from the San Diego Padres; team management, physicians, trainers and physical therapist are slated to participate in the interactive session. The San Diego Shoulder Institute is open to all levels of industry professionals and also includes targeted breakout sessions focused on specific levels of comprehension and informational need.

On the final day of the conference, past fellows of the Boston Shoulder Institute at Harvard Medical School will congregate in a first-ever alumni meeting and form a permanent study group, another recognition of Dr. Esch’s widespread influence. Members will include Dr. Boileau and Dr. JP Warner, the Boston Shoulder Institute’s Co-Director.
