Is the US Political System Dysfunctional? Yes says Professor

Political Science Professor Dr. Stephen W. Nichols is scheduled to talk about the US government on Oct. 9 at the Oceanside Public Library's Civic Center location.

Cal State University San Marcos Political Science Professor Dr. Stephen W. Nichols will lead a public discussion on what he terms as “Broken Government,” starting at 6 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Oceanside Public Library’s Civic Center location, library officials announced today.

“Dr. Nichols’ opinion is that the United States’ political system has become dysfunctional, to such a degree that the country has arrived at a federal government shutdown over health care reform,” organizers wrote in a news release.

Dr. Nichols’ is set to share his ideas, and invite comment and discussion, is offered as part of the Oceanside Public Library “No Participation Required” program series, organizers wrote.

Nichols is an Associate Professor of Political Science at CSUSM and holds a Ph.D. from Ohio State University, according to a bio provided by the library. He studies American political behavior and institutions, and his research and teaching interests include political participation, public opinion, political parties, political psychology, and research methodology, the bio continued.

The Civic Center Library is at 330 North Coast Highway, in downtown Oceanside. Admission is free. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library and is part of the “No Participation Required” series, held the second Wednesday of every month. The program presents local activists, professors, authors, artists and other talented folk sharing their knowledge, library officials said.
