ESPN, Sponsors Help Lift Local Charger TV Blackout

In order for local television to broadcast Monday night's San Diego Chargers-Indianapolis Colts, a certain number of tickets had to be sold.

ESPN and several sponsors have guaranteed the purchase of enough tickets to lift the local television blackout of Monday's San Diego Chargers-Indianapolis Colts game at Qualcomm Stadium, the NFL team announced today.

The Chargers received a 24-hour extension of the usual 72-hour deadline Friday, giving them until 5:40 p.m. today to sell about 9,000 general tickets to lift the blackout.

ESPN and what the Chargers described as a "consortium of supportive sponsors" including Union Bank, Donovan Steak & Chop House and Donovan's Prime Seafood and Brigantine Family of Restaurants then guaranteed to purchase enough tickets to lift the local television blackout.

"ESPN is pleased to have avoided the blackout and we are happy to work with local military and charitable organizations in San Diego to distribute a portion of the tickets to individuals and families who otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend the game," said Doug White, ESPN's senior director of programming and acquisitions.

Approximately 8,500 general tickets and several hundred Club seats remain available, a team official said.
