Oceanside Chamber Uses Facebook to Raise Thousands in Hurricane Relief

The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce has raised some $4,000 in Walmart and Lowe’s gift cards for residents of Oceanside, NY who have been affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce is known to help Oceanside residents, but this time it’s helping those who live in Oceanside, NY.

It’s raised some $4,000 in Walmart and Lowe’s gift cards for residents of the affected area.

“The OCC is helping Oceanside, NY because it is the right thing to do—one business community helping another,” stated Oceanside, CA CEO David Nydegger.

The New York city was devastated by Hurricane Sandy last month and the local chamber held a fundraiser donating $1 for every new “like” on their Facebook page. The raised funds include donations from the Oceanside Chamber Foundation, local residents and businesses, Scott Ashton of the Chamber told Patch. The chamber sends the cards to the Oceanside (NY) Chamber of Commerce to distribute.

The local chamber has also gotten about 2,600 new “likes.”

The project began Nov. 8 and is likely running until the end of the year, Ashton stated.
