5 Things: Schools Open, San Onofre, Buffalo Alley Run, Ride for Semper Fi, Noise Alerts

Here are five things that are upcoming this week that are of interest to Camp Pendleton and the base community.

We've gathered up five things on the calendar this week.

Oceanside Schools Open on Columbus Day

Monday is Columbus Day, but the schools will hold classes, according to the school district's website.

Columbus Day is not a holiday for many government workers in California.

In other school business, the district board of education will hold a regular meeting on Tuesday, 6 p.m., at the district office boardroom, 2111 Mission Ave.

A public hearing is set for 7 p.m. on the state of instructional materials under the Williams Settlement, which requires schools to evaluate if they have sufficient textbooks and other teaching materials.

Nuclear Experts to Discuss San Onofre

The environmental group San Clemente Green will hold a community forum Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. to hear from non-industry nuclear experts. Among those scheduled to speak are:

• Andrew Gundersen of Fairewinds, a nuclear engineer and adviser to the Fukushima, Japan, response team.

• Helen Caldicott, founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility.

• Dr. William Perkins, a pediatrician on the Physicians for Social Responsibility board.

• Daniel O. Hirsch, lecturer on nuclear policy at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

The forum begins at 6:30 p.m. at the San Clemente Community Center at 100 Calle Salle.

Buffalo Alley Run Set for Saturday

A 5K, 10K and 1K kids' race will be held Saturday at 53 Area Camp Horno on Pendleton to honor troops injured or killed in combat.

The is a cross-country race that will take runners "past scenic visitas along gently rolling terrain," states the Camp Pendleton races website.

Online registration ends Wednesday, but day-of-race registration opens at 7 a.m.

Sign-ups are free for Camp Pendleton active-duty military. The 10K race, which has a two-hour limit, is $45 for civilians and $30 for active-duty military other than from Camp Pendleton. The 5K race is $30 for civilians and $25 for non-Pendleton military. The 1K Kids run is $10.

The 10K race begins at 8:05 a.m. followed by the other races. For more information, visit the races website.

Ride for Semper Fi Starts Wednesday

The Ride for Semper Fi, a fundraiser for the Semper Fi Fund benefiting injured Marines and their families, gets underway this week.

Arizona clinical psychologist Chris Hummel and other cyclists plan to bike 430 miles from Scottsdale to San Diego, Oct. 12 to 16, according to the fund website.

The organizer of The Ride for Semper Fi, John Greenway, got the idea for the fundraiser after attending his nephew’s graduation from Marine boot camp at Camp Pendleton.

Noise Alerts Posted for Pendleton

Noise advisories have been posted for Camp Pendleton through Friday.

High-explosive munitions will be fired in the Whiskey/Zulu impact areas.

The sounds may be heard up to 50 miles away, depending on the weather conditions, the base said on its website.

To inquire about noise, residents can contact the Range Operations Division office at 725-0357 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
