East Coast Marines Beat Camp Pendleton Marines in Surf Contest

For the second year in a row, the East coasters won bragging rights, and brand new boards, in the friendly contest sponsored by Red Bull.

Marines from Camp Pendleton were not able to take advantage of their home waters during a surf contest on Saturday, as they were beaten by a group of surfing Marines from the East Coast.

According to Star and Stripes, the East Coasters beat the West Coast team by a single-point in the third annual Red Bull Rivals surf contest, held at the camp's Del Mar Jetty. It is the second consecutive year that the Camp Pendleton team has fallen to their cross-country rivals.

Despite the loss, West Coast team captain Master Sgt. Eric Franklin said it was a great time.

“I think we played a good game,” he told the military publication. “I had a good time – I got some good waves.”

The teams were judged by National Surf League judges, according to the paper, who watched intently as each team surfed four 15-minute heats. At the end of the session, which ended after sunset with the aid of portable lights, the East team prevailed by a single point.

Along with bragging rights, the East team members also took home new surfboards.

MVPs of the respective teams were Master Gunnery Sgt. Jay Michael Auwae for the Pendleton Marines, and Chief Petty Officer Randy Adalin for the East Coast team.
