Iconic country singer George Jones—who died Friday at the age of 81—had a local connection.

Jones, a Texas native, joined the Marine Corps in 1951 and spent the majority of his service stationed at Camp Pendleton and performed in San Francisco, according to the book "The Guide to United States Popular Culture."

He was known for such hits as "He Stopped Loving Her Today" and "White Lightning."
