The Oceanside Public Library announced Friday that its third "Big Read" program will be funded with a $17,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The citywide reading program will begin in January and focus on "The Maltese Falcon," the classic 1930 Dashiell Hammett novel that introduced Detective Sam Spade.

"The Oceanside Public Library is extremely pleased and honored to be able to bring another 'Big Read' to the community," said Franklin Escobedo, the principal librarian. "We have planned some exciting and unique programs to complement the book, and hope everyone will join us to read, discuss and celebrate this literary work that sparked a generation of noir fiction."

The Big Read program is designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment, according to the library.

The Oceanside library, which was one of 77 organizations awarded NEA funding for the program, plans to partner with the Oceanside Police Department, LGBTQ Resource Center, Oceanside Museum of Art and other organizations to spread word about the program.
