Limited Authority is Keeping Regulators from Enforcing Earthquake Building Codes

The Division of the State Architect doesn't have enough power to enforce state building codes in schools, California Watch reports.

A state audit shows the Division of the State Architect — which oversees school construction — has limited authority over districts. The lack of oversight means students may occupy buildings that don't meet current seizmic standards, California Watch reports.

In May, Patch published findings of a 19-month California Watch investigation uncovering earthquake safety hazards in public schools. The report showed that that did not meet the proper structural codes for earthquakes.
