River Fire in Oceanside Does Not Threaten Homes, City Says

A riverbed fire in Oceanside scorched about 100 acres today but not threatening any structures, city officials said.

The fire broke out in the bed of the San Luis Rey River, east of College Boulevard, early Wednesday afternoon, according to fire department officials.

As of 8:30 this morning, the fire was burning at a "moderate rate of spread," a city official said. Twelve hours earlier the fire was reported to be at 50 acres and 20 percent containment.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
