Sewage Spill is Impacting Local Lake

Oceanside and San Diego County officials are working on a sewage spill that occurred today that has affected nearby Calavera Lake.

According to officials, an estimated 11,400 gallons of sewage spilled into the lake at 8:42 a.m. when a broken water main opened a sinkhole in the 4700 block of Lake Boulevard in Oceanside, officials said.

The spill eventually caused a sewer pipe to rupture, he said. The sewage spill was stopped about 9:15 a.m. the same day that a force main pump station was shut down, officials wrote in a news release.

About 8,400 gallons of sewage flowed into an adjacent storm drain which empties into an unnamed creek just south of the intersection of Evening Canyon Road and Lake Boulevard also in Oceanside, officials wrote.

The creek flows southwest for some 4,000 feet before emptying into Calavera Lake in Carlsbad.

Officials said they have placed signs warning of sewage contamination at public access points along the north and west portions of Calavera Lake. Those are scheduled to remain in place until samples confirm that water does not pose a danger, officials said.
