BREAKING NEWS: Oceanside Names New City Manager

Oceanside officials today announced the appointment of Steve Jepsen as city manager in place of departing Peter Weiss.

The announcement was made by email just after noon. Below is the news release with only minor editing.

The Oceanside City Council has appointed Steve Jepsen as City Manager effective November 18, 2013. 

"I am honored to be given this opportunity and responsibility.  This community has always been my home and I am looking forward to moving back to Oceanside. I am committed to working closely with the entire City Council to further their goals for the City,” said Jepsen.  “Oceanside has always had exceptional and dedicated employees and I look forward to working with each and every one of them.”

“There are many projects that I initiated that I would love to be given an opportunity to take to fruition,” he continued. “The Beach Hotel, El Corazon, restoring economic stability, resurrecting economic development and job growth, infrastructure maintenance and road network completion, service delivery options for first responders, and augmenting police service focusing on neighborhoods, gangs and drug enforcement efforts. I would look forward to working with all Councilmembers and the community to these ends.”

Jepsen will replace outgoing City Manager, Peter Weiss, who gave his resignation in August, 2013.  Jepsen’s salary will be $231,840 annually.

“Steve is an excellent choice for the City Manager position and has over 20 years of experience as a public executive.  He knows the organizational structure and can step right in,” said Deputy Mayor Jerry Kern.  “His experience and familiarity with the City should help to ensure that the highest levels of service continue during this transition.”

Jepsen is currently the City Manager of Yuba City, located in Northern California, where he has served since leaving Oceanside in 2006.  Prior to his Yuba City post, Jepsen was Oceanside’s City Manager from 2000 – 2006.  Jepsen was appointed Deputy City Manager in 1999, after serving as Oceanside Community Services Director since 1994.  Prior to working for the City of Oceanside, Jepsen served as the Assistant City Manager of Concord, California, where he also served as Interim Redevelopment Director and Director of Community Development and Public Works. 

Jepsen is a native of Omaha, Nebraska and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and two Masters degrees in both Civil Engineering and Urban Planning.  He and his wife Lynn have two grown children.
