Four U.S. Marines died today in an accident at Camp Pendleton, base officials reported.

The personnel were fatally injured about 11 a.m. while engaged in routine maintenance of the Zulu Impact Area, an artillery and bombing range near the center of the northern San Diego County military base, authorities said.

Details on the exact nature of the accident remained unavailable in the mid-afternoon, according Lt. Ryan Finnegan, a base spokesman.

The victims' names were withheld pending family notification.

Brig. Gen. John Bullard, commanding general of Marine Corps Installations West, offered "heartfelt prayers and condolences to the families of the Marines lost today in this tragic accident."

"Our first priority is to provide the families with the support they need during this difficult time," Bullard said.
