PHOTOS: Camp Pendleton Changes Names, Head Col. Retires

Brig. Gen. Vincent A. Coglianese will now command Marine Corps installations in Southern California and Arizona.

Col. Nicholas F. Marano was honored at a Camp Pendleton ceremony Thursday after being base commander for nearly three years.

He has overseen more than $3 billion in work on the base, the North County Times reports. He will stay in the area and seek civilian employment, he said.

Marano made headlines last month for criticizing the statement civilian authorities' released in in San Clemente.

Marine Corps Installations West and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton merged commands prior to the ceremony. Brig. Gen. Vincent A. Coglianese — who formerly commanded Marine Corps Installations West — will now lead the new unit and will be the sole authority for all matters related to Camp Pendleton, Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, MCAS Miramar, Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow and MCAS Yuma.

The base's flag was retired and a new one was replaced and reads:
