Sanchez: Budget Cuts 'Play a Role' in Oceanside Gang Violence

Oceanside City Councilwoman Esther Sanchez discusses the Libby Lake Park shooting on KOCT's Journalist Roundtable.

In KOCT’s April Journalist Roundtable, Oceanside City Councilwoman Esther Sanchez discusses the shooting of four teenagers at Libby Lake Park last month.

Host Kent Davy asks her if recent state budget cuts attributed to an increase of gang violence.

“I believe the cuts … play a role,” she says, adding that cities and nonprofits have cut back programs in high-crime neighborhoods. “When you solve a crime or you feel that things are under control, you pull back and when that happens you sometimes … something then happens or can happen.”
