Statue Honoring Junior Seau Sees Delay

Plans to build a statue in honor of Junior Seau were delayed this week.

A statue honoring NFL legend and former Oceanside resident Junior Seau will take more time to build than expected, the North County Times reported.

Oceanside resident Michael Walter, who is coordinating the project, was unable to present the plans to the city's Art Commission this week for approval. The Commission's next meeting is in February.

However, Walter—who had hoped to build the statue by May—will also need to receive approval from the City Council and the California Coastal Commission, according to the newspaper.

Walter, who is working with a Carlsbad artist, hopes to place the statue at the beach near Seau's oceanfront home.

Seau died on May 2 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was drafted by the Chargers with the fifth overall pick in the 1990 NFL Draft out of the University of Southern California. He played with the Chargers for 13 years before finishing his career with the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots.
