MiraCosta College Foundation Gives Away 30 Computers

The MiraCosta College Foundation held their annual Computer Giveaway on May 1, providing 30 low-income MiraCosta College students with computers and printers at no cost. The giveaway was made possible by a joint effort of the Seth Sprague Educational and Charitable Foundation, Adaptive Computer Empowerment Services (ACES) and The Nice Guys, a San Diego nonprofit charitable organization.

Irene DeWatteville, of the Seth Sprague Educational and Charitable Foundation, facilitated a donation of $3,000 to the college foundation, which paid for the used computers—refurbished by ACES to like-new condition and loaded with new software. The Nice Guys purchased brand-new printers for the students, and the organization’s Art Rowsell delivered them on the day of the giveaway.

Students who received the computers/printers previously had to rely on local and campus library computers, making it difficult to manage time for homework and have the ability to print out assignments and documents as needed.

MiraCosta College student and single father Manuel Paz, could not be more thankful for the opportunity. “I’m excited my daughters [and I] get to have access to a computer, which will make it a lot easier to do homework and help get our education done,” Paz said. Paz recently returned to MiraCosta College to get his GED and hopes to teach his daughters that “knowledge is power” and that power can be attained through education.

With the support of Seth Sprague Educational and Charitable Foundation, ACES and The Nice Guys, students like Manuel Paz and his daughters will continue get the support they need and more.
