Video: Motorcycle 'Lane-Splitting' now Prohibited on Base

The practice of riding a motorcycle between two lanes of slower moving or stopped traffic is now against the rules.

Brig. Gen. Vincent A. Coglianese, commander of the Marine Corps Installations West and Camp Pendleton, published a letter Thursday prohibiting "lane-splitting" on area bases.

The practice—also known as "white-lining" or "filtering"—is when a motorcycle or motorized scooter travels between lanes of slower moving traffic. The accompanying video shows a minor crash caused by the method.

Passing on the right, riding on the shoulder, riding in a designated emergency lane or crossing over the fog line—except when permitted by law—is also prohibited, base officials said in a release.
