BACKGROUND:

Visit Oceanside celebrates National Tourism Week with an annual beach Clean-up. TheOceanside Tourism Council (OTC) has adopted the Oceanside Harbor Beach through I love a Clean San Diego's Adopt a Beach Program.

Sponsored by the U.S. Travel Association, National Tourism Week is May 7-13, 2012. Celebrating the importance of Tourism to our national, local and state economies. The following are some interesting facts:

Last year, over $3 million was generated in hotel tax alone that went into the City ofOceanside's general fund.

Visit Oceanside directly influenced over $28 million in visitor spending to Oceanside, supporting over 600 jobs.

 In San Diego, tourism employs 160,000 people (13% of the county's population) and generated over $7.5 billion in visitor spending.

Travel and tourism generated $1.9 trillion in economic output for the US economy in 2012.

 

The industry is one of America's largest employers, supporting 14.4 million jobs. Travel and tourism directly generated $124 billion in tax revenue for local, state and federal governments.

 

Each U.S. household would pay $1,055 more in taxes without the tax revenue generated by the travel and tourism industry.

 

Direct spending by resident and international travelers in the U.S. averaged $2.2 billion a day, $92.8 million an hour, $1.5 million a minute, and $25,700 a second.
