Man Found Dead on Arthur Avenue in Oceanside Identified

Louiegie Bermas, 21, was found dead at about 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday in the 600 block of Arthur Avenue, in a neighborhood near Camp Pendleton.

Authorities Thursday released the name of a young man slain by an unidentified assailant during a confrontation in a neighborhood near Camp Pendleton.

Patrol officers responding to a report of an assault in the 600 block of Arthur Avenue in northern Oceanside shortly after 5:30 a.m. Wednesday found Louiegie Bermas, 21, dead in the street, according to police.

Bermas' body bore signs of suspicious trauma, Sgt. Matt Christensen said, declining to elaborate. Detectives have deemed the death a homicide.

A cause-of-death ruling was on hold pending autopsy results.

The slaying occurred after the victim and a companion were confronted by several other people, the sergeant said. Bermas' friend suffered non-life- threatening injuries during the altercation.

The motive for the fatal attack was unclear.

"It is not yet known if the incident (was) gang-motivated," Christensen said. "Police are still interviewing potential witnesses and seeking additional information."
